Plinth-Labs, a local startup focused on sustainable housing solutions, presented a new vision for affordable housing at the Sag Harbor Village Board meeting this September. The initiative introduces the use of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) as a scalable and cost-effective way to expand housing options within the village.
The project responds to the East End’s growing housing shortage by offering an alternative to large, high-cost developments. Instead, ADUs provide smaller, code-compliant units that integrate seamlessly into existing neighborhoods—helping homeowners, businesses, and local government address the challenge in a practical, community-driven way.
Plinth-Labs’ proposal outlines several key steps: creating a dedicated permitting pathway to speed approvals, financing and building demonstration units, and establishing partnerships with local businesses to support the rollout. Businesses may contribute funding or subsidies, while homeowners could host units on their properties. Over time, revenue would be reinvested to scale the program.
The Village Board responded positively, noting the clarity of the approach and its alignment with local zoning rules. Next steps include developing cost models, identifying demonstration sites, and continuing collaboration with the community to bring the first units online
